While filming 'Stand by Me,' Jerry O'Connell apologizes to Wil Wheaton for not noticing his child abuse. |
On Thursday's edition of "The Talk," Jerry O'Connell apologized to his "Stand by Me" co-star Wil Wheaton for not realizing he was suffering from child abuse while filming the famous 1986 coming-of-age film.
Wheaton told Yahoo Entertainment in May 2021 that his parents "pressed" him to become an actor as a youngster, and that he endured "a combination of horrible emotional abuse from my father and a lot of manipulation, using me, from my mother."
For his role in "Stand by Me," the actor absorbed the grief experienced by his parents.

"I can't deny the incredible grief in my eyes when I see 'Stand by Me' today," Wheaton stated at the time. "And I can't deny that it was that melancholy, that solitude, that I believe gave Gordie the impetus to come to life."
"I heard before you talk about some of the hardships you were going through during 'Stand by Me,' and while I was 11 at the time, that's an excuse, I do want to apologize for not being there more for you when you were younger," O'Connell said during Wheaton's visit on "The Talk."
"But, in the larger picture," O'Connell noted, "you never know what someone is going through while you're with them." "I don't feel bad about it, but I just want to apologize for not being there for you more."
"Stand by Me" stars O'Connell, Wheaton, River Phoenix, and Corey Feldman as four friends who uncover the body of a missing child while on a trek in 1959. Rob Reiner's picture, based on Stephen King's novel, received an Oscar nomination for best-adapted screenplay and grossed $52 million worldwide.
